California student receives national award for community involvement

Charlotte Bevan, an eighth-grader at Burke Middle School in Irvine, Calif., was presented with the “Young Patriot Award” by Col. Don Blevins on Thursday morning in an honor for her contributions to national education.

Presenting her with the award, Col. Blevins cited Bevan’s volunteer activities within the community, which have included serving at one of the county’s food banks, participating in an academic turnaround program at her school and speaking at several political forums.

In her remarks, Bevan expressed her desire to make her community and the country a better place for all to live, saying that her participation in multiple educational and political organizations contributed to that.

“I work hard to be involved in multiple groups,” she said. “I’m passionate about my community and what I do. I want all students and all Americans to be interested in what we can accomplish as a whole, and not just what we can achieve as a group.”
